Goals are one of the most important pillars of a productive and purposeful life. Yet, setting goals is something that most of us are pretty rubbish at. I set myself quite a few goals and challenges in 2018 - running was by far the most successful. And that got me thinking. What was it about this goal that made it so successful? What can I learn from running 1000 miles that I can take into other areas of my life? How can I use my learning to help you?
I don’t know about anyone else but I can feel the energy starting to shift. For me, this feels like a period of creativity and new beginnings, even as we will start to see nature preparing for the deep sleep of winter. I've been thinking about what I want to create over the next few months and how I want to do that. Because where your attention goes, the energy flows and results show.
...It’s my fourth anniversary of becoming a civilian.
I love this anniversary. It marks such a fundamental change in my life. One of real fork-in-the-road moments in life. I really enjoy taking some time to reflect on what’s happened in the last year and to check-in with the new life I’m creating for myself.
Action lies at the heart of the coaching.
If you want something to change in your life, it’s not enough just to recognise and understand the problem. You have to do something differently if you want to see a different result.
And yet, so many of us are scared to commit to an action or a goal in case we fail.
Kelly McGonigal’s TED Talk has had more than 10 million views. I love her perspective on the benefits of stress and how we can make friends with stress — it certainly doesn’t seem to be going anywhere fast.

This type of stress is often referred to as eustress (as opposed to distress — the bad kind) — I say often, I only came across the word while researching this post.
